“The American Buffalo is a symbol of strength, provision, prosperity, adaption, determination, and strong will (Buffalo Bison Symbolism). These are all empowering qualities that I feel celebrate the history behind the education taught throughout the 150 years this major has existed.
The buffalo is known as a sacred symbol to American Indians for a few unique and admirable qualities (Buffalo Bison Symbolism). First and foremost as a sign of provision. Each bone, muscle, and inch of fur was used by Native Americans to create shelter, weapons, and feed the population. When Bluemont College offered women to get an education in homemaking this allowed women to improve on their skills to provide for the house in the social standards of that time. As stated in one source, “Nothing could sway a bison from its full-on course, not even predators or hunters. Hence, it imparts determination that allows you to make clear and resounding decisions. This is important in allowing you to see through the completion of your goals,” (Buffalo Bison Symbolism). As women continue to gain social rights and empowerment through feminism, they have had to remain determined to beat the odds and stand up for what was right.”
