PRAIRIE Tote - Large

The Prairie totes tell the story of the beauty of the Flint Hills Prairie here in Kansas. As a class, we foraged from the prairie for natural dyestuffs. The color and prints on these totes were from this trip. We found a new dye plant, Prairie Broom. We found it produced a beautiful yellow dye and upon adding iron a gorgeous olive green color. We felt the olive green gave a good contrast to the botanical printed pockets. Botanical printing is the technique of placing the actual plant pieces (flowers, stems, and/or leaves) on the fabric, covering with an iron-treated fabric and steaming. The interesting feature that the prairie broom left with this technique was the yellow dye coming out of the flowers onto the fabric. The lining also features Prairie Broom botanical printing.

These totes embody the Flint Hills Prairie through the use of Prairie Broom as a dye and botanical print creating a natural color scheme. These totes are perfect for anyone who calls Kansas home. It has strong connections to the openness of the Kansas Flint Hills and the plants that reside there.
